Something for the weekend….

This week has been an interesting one.

With Sony beginning to push their next Playstation while admitting that they got the  PS Vita sales projections wrong and Microsoft finally conceding that the Xbox 720 is a real product and admitting that the world was right (as well as the billboards on Real Steel).

It finally looks like 2013 is going to be a good year for us all as specs (rumours) begin to leak.

While Sony are keeping fairly tight lipped Microsoft has already positioned itself by claiming voice control along with Kinect technology.  How true this is I’m not sure – voice control is a little bit of a red herring in my opinion.  Its not exactly ground breaking tech and it is going to take something extra special to help it sell. The 8-core CPU, 8GB of RAM and a Blu-ray drive is not enough of an improvement to make people gasp in awe.

The Playstation on the other hand is looking like the graphical king of the two new consoles and with processor specs the really do rival one another it’s set to be a big old show down.

My first tablet….

This is my first blog from a tablet……may sound a little silly from someone who loves his tech but I have always been a little reluctant to adopt a new form factor.  I was bitten by the netbook fiasco. The fact that the industry has now fallen out with netbooks after I spent a small fortune on one.

I still like my netbook though. I can carry it around and develop my php skills on the go. But the problem is they are too slow. If you consider a smart phone can handle more processing than a PC then you can see the disadvantage.

So here is the thing. When I bought a smartphone I did not think it could handle the speed of my typing. I suppose being an ardent Blackberry fan did not help because I loved the qwerty keyboard and could text or email at some speed but when my daughter decided to use it as a teething device the screen died and I was forced to change. I would still argue that touch screen devices are slower than the more traditional physical buttons but it is a different experience and one that takes some time getting used to.

I have written a numbr of blogs from a Galaxy S2 which I still use now and even now as I write this I am finding my typing speed and accuracy increase. I dearly miss a cursor key though – I hate zooming in to place my cursor to fix a missing letter. I have tried different keyboard layouts to try and fix things but I am a traditional geek at heart and cant abide split keyboards or swipe keyboards or even speech.

To cut a long story short and stop me from waffling does a tablet work or more to the point can I see it being along erm, usable, gadget with some longevity.

Yes.

Android 4 – Ice Cream Video

Found this video out in the wild.  It’s Android 4 running on a Samsung Nexus.

It looks very impressive and more importantly seems much more responsive than 3.x.  The voice features look first class and the camera is more like a true digital camera instead of the slow and cumbersome beasts they have been so far.

I have no doubt there will be more to come

Team Viewer – Android & iPhone app review.

Team Viewer is a……probably better to quote from their website -:

“TeamViewer connects to any PC or server around the world within a few seconds. You can remote control your partner’s PC as if you were sitting right in front of it.”

What Team Viewer does is quite remarkable. There are other service providers that can do what Team Viewer does, such as VNC or Remote Desktop, but non quite as well as Team Viewer and not from a mobile device.

Cordy – Android Game Review – Is this the future face of mobile platform games?

There have been many platformers over the years that have taken the world by storm.  From the not so humble beginnings of a certain plumber through , Sonic & Zool – they all make their mark on their own platform, namely Nintendo, Sega & Commodore and each one of these titles was unique to each machine and added something a little different.

Mario went on to rule and Sonic proudly boasts a much higher profile that it once had when Sega stopped making hardware and while Android has had a couple of contenders Cordy is the first truly awesome platformer to hit Android.

Destroy Gunners Android Game Review

Destroy Gunners is a 3D shooter pretty much like the kind of Mech games that once graced our desktop machines.

On launching the game you are confronted with a  standard menu with settings and help menu’s to help you through. Its basically a standard affair where you simply kill everything on screen in your little 3D world but there is more than enough here to keep you coming back for more.  While the 3D is relatively standard for this type and most types of 3D games it is lacking in the shadow department.  The sense of depth and dimension is lost

Water 3D Live Wallpaper review

Posted by Ian | Posted in Android Apps | Posted on 26-09-2011

While most live wallpapers are quite gimmicky and this wallpaper is, to a point,  the same but it’s probably one of the few that you can simply run and forget that you are using it.

While the title probably says it all let me tell you more.

Water 3D is a live wallpaper for your Android phone and simply adds a little water scene but when you touch the screen, lets says between desktops, the water reacts to your finger presses and ripples form in the water.

Star Legends 3D MMO – Android Game Review

Star Legends is a strange game.  Not in the sense that it is peculiar to play or has strange controls because I have to begin by saying it does not.  When I saw it available for download I expected something not so highly polished, something that maybe was not quite……this good.

Not wanting to state the obvious but not all phones come loaded with the best software.  They may come with software, oviously, but sometimes they just don’t make the grade – they fall short of what our expectations are.  Here is our run down of the best essential apps to have on your phone.

The future of robotics.

We have all seen a future world, thanks to Hollywood, where robots and androids do our bidding and lifelike replica’s of ourselves exist autonomously.  The work being being done in Japan at the moment are far beyond the rest of the world and the gentle expressions that this robot can achieve is nothing short of near perfection.

Retro – Atari Lynx Handheld Console

I used to love this console.

I spent many a night trying to beat my best scores on a BMX game that came as part of the California games pack.  The only BMX game where you could complete quadruple front flips and then bounce off the ground and complete a triple back flip.

I don’t remember the console being quite this big way back when but it’s sprite scaling was
